Timon and Melchior Grau have been appointed CEOs of German lighting brand, Tobias Grau. The brothers, who began working with the company in 2017, will share the position with immediate effect.
Designer Tobias Grau established his eponymous company in Hamburg in 1986. The brand made its mark with timeless designs for home and office. Now counting 140 employees, the company houses all its design and manufacture at its headquarters outside Hamburg.
As the company marks its 35th anniversary, Tobias and his wife Franziska step back, handing over all executive responsibility to Timon and Melchior. Together, the brothers are committed to Grau’s long tradition of sustainability and innovation, while looking to further develop the brand’s creative expression and to champion inspiration through light.
After their degree in political economics, Timon and Melchior graduated in art. They studied with professors Ai Weiwei and Hito Steyerl at Berlin University of the Arts, and with Willem De Rooij at Städelschule in Frankfurt. As their interest in performance and installation practice merged with their impressions and encounters at Grau, their work became increasingly oriented around the creative potential of light making and the experience of illumination.
In 2018, the brothers ushered in a fresh generation of Tobias Grau luminaires with portable lamp PARROT. Defined by it‘s sculptural shape and cable-free technology, the lamp introduced new levels of mobile and expressive lighting, winning a Wallpaper* Design Award, iF Design Award, and German Design Award.
This year, the brothers will roll out their TEAM workspace collection, promising adaptive and intuitive lighting for every type of office, including the first professional-caliber lamp for home office.
“It’s with great pride and excitement that we hand over to Timon and Melchior,” said Tobias and Franziska Grau. “Their leadership is marked by creativity, drive, and deep commitment to a sustainable and collaborative working practice. We know they will steer the brand into a thriving future.” Franziska Grau will continue to work for the company in the Finance department and Tobias Grau will work as a freelance designer on selected projects.
“We are honoured to take on this new role and uphold Grau’s tradition of lighting excellence,” the brothers said on their appointment. “We are passionate about light’s ability to transform our emotions, interactions, and environments. Together with our outstanding team we will build the best possible product, with intuitive use and inspiration at its core.”
